Setting up your own personal altar in your home is important and can be a beautiful aspect of your spiritual journey. It is you ordaining a sacred place in your home that is set aside for you to interact directly with the spiritual. This space allows you to be able to focus on becoming the best version of you and to connect with your higher self.
There are many types of altars around the world and not all are necessarily physical. Altars throughout history have been used as sites for placing offerings, performing sacrifices or carrying out magick rituals. The purpose of your personal altar is always up to you and it is good to have the type of altar you want to build in mind before you start.
STEP 1 – SET AN INTENTION FOR YOUR ALTAR
You may want to construct an altar to honor your ancestors or work with specific deities that resonate with you. Whatever type of altar you decide to build, remember that all are sacred and should be respected. When you build an altar, you are making a pledge to stay disciplined and increase the connection you have within yourself and your beliefs.
STEP 2 – CHOOSE A LOCATION FOR YOUR ALTAR
Deciding where to put your altar depends on the space and layout of your home. This space can be on a table, nightstand, in the corner of a room, in a closet, in the basement, in your living room or wherever you feel drawn to put it. Just ensure that it is in a space where you feel comfortable meditating and can be at peace.
STEP 3 – SET UP YOUR ALTAR
The structure of your altar can be as simple as a tv table, a plate, slab of wood, shelf, or anything you have that will hold your special items. If you live in an area where you do not have a lot of space or you share a room with people who may not understand your beliefs, it may be good to construct your altar on a tray that can be easily slid under your bed whenever you are not meditating in front of it. Once you’ve chosen the foundation for your altar, you can now take the time adorning it with items that resonate with you, which could include crystals, pictures, candles, oils, incense, water and statues of deities.
STEP 4 – CONSECRATE YOUR ALTAR
After you have built your altar and adorned it, it is time to consecrate your space and invite the type of energy you work with into this area of your home. This can be done by meditating, chanting, praying, lighting incense and burning sage. Set intentions for your altar by focusing on what it is you want to bring into your life.
This new space that you have created is your own personal sanctuary where you can be yourself, feel comfortable and just dive deeper in to your spiritual journey. Continue to always use your altar and create a ritual where you set aside some time to sit in front of it and talk, reflect, meditate, laugh, cry, sing, dance, and get to better understand all the many different aspects of yourself. You are all, You are God.
